These Happy Golden Years

 

You have noticed that your pet has some gray hairs on his muzzle.  You have noticed a slight haze in his eyes.  He is not as spry as before.  Then you realize it has been 7 or 8 years since your pet was a wiggly baby.  Welcome to the senior/geriatric years of pet ownership!

At Aurora Hills Animal Hospital, we want to help you embrace this stage in your pet's life.  Our senior pets do have a few more needs than our younger pets, but they still have a ton of love to give in return for the extra care they require.  Because our senior pets are aging more quickly than a human (6 to 7 times faster, we recommend twice yearly examinations so that we can more quickly detect and treat medical problems.  Based upon your pet's medical condition, we may recommend more frequent examinations and/or lab work.  Here is an example of a typical senior wellness plan:

Dog 

7th Year and Onward Wellness Consultation

Two complete physical examinations
        6 months apart
Annual fecal examination
Annual heart worm test 
Annual senior screening blood work
Annual urinalysis
Annual Tonometry (Glaucoma screen)
Blood Pressure every 6 months
Intraoral Bordatella vaccine (kennel cough)
        Given every 6 months if at risk
1-Year Leptospirosis vaccine (if at risk)
Rabies vaccines administered
every 3 years
12 months of heart worm prevention
Discussion of nutrition, parasite control,
behavior, and age related concerns

 

Cat 

7th Year and Onward Wellness Consultation

Two complete physical examinations
        6 months apart
Annual fecal examination
Annual senior screening blood work
Annual urinalysis
Annual FeLV/FIV test (if at risk)
Blood Pressure every 6 months
1-year Rabies vaccine
Discussion of nutrition, parasite control,
behavior, and age related concerns
